The mid-afternoon hail storm was quite a wakeup call - literally! Go to sleep after reporting to CoCoRaHS and wakeup to make a report!! The hail was quite large, none of these tiny pieces hitting, no "snowstorm" feeling, but all over a pea, with a substantial volume (35%) at 5/8" and with another 20% at 3/4", based on random sampling utilizing the dixie cup method: took a 4oz Dixie cup and dragged thru the grass and on the group for 10 seconds, then held 10. Computer showed me a randomized path to walk, based upon my yards exposure, so that a representative random sample would be gathered for assessment.
To sort, old (ancient) plastic colander has holes cut to allow the smallest stones thru, volume determined by weight of total volume percentage. (Yes, you move REALLY fast). A +5% weight added for loss due to melting for each 10 min in processing.
My 1/4 acre yielded an estimated 52 lbs of hail; little penetration into ground as there is good, healthy grass and mulched garden, plus plentiful weeds (thank you for killing them off) |
